A SICK DAY FOR AMOS McGEE

By Philip C. Stead.
Illustrated by Erin E. Stead.

When elderly zookeeper Amos catches a cold
he must stay home from work. The chess-playing
elephant, the race-running tortoise, the shy
penguin, the runny-nosed rhino and story-loving
owl miss him so much that they take a bus to
his house and take care of him in the same
way that he has taken care of them.

Stead’s attention to the smallest details is what
allows the reader/viewer to experience this book many
times over and still discover surprises each time:
from the miniature bus stop for the mouse to the
tie-wearing bird; from the sweet absurdity of Amos’
bunny slippers to the depiction of a penguin
donning floaties.
