Notes from the Library
Director
If you suffer from the winter doldrums,
stop by the library and you are sure to get hooked on all the
excitement and activity in the air. We have new books for children
and YA's, thanks to our great Friends. We also have new equipment at
our branch libraries, thanks to our Friends. With grants totaling
$6,000 from the Mississippi Library Commission, the library is
purchasing new biographies for the children's section and a "reading
readiness AWE computer." Books and Authors programs continue to draw
great audiences and participation on the third Thursday of each
month. Tax preparation will be available each Thursday from noon
until 4 p.m. This is a great service sponsored by AARP.
If you haven't tried an ereader
(electronic reader), we have those too, fully prepared with over 150
of our most popular book titles. If you don't see them on the
circulation desk, request one, and we will get it to you as soon as
it becomes available. This has become one of our most successful
grant projects to date. Try one and see what you think!
If you love e-reading, check
out our website. It is chock full of new ebook titles that you can
download.

Leap Into the New Year: Read a Book !
Laura Tramel, Children's Librarian
The children's section of the library is
abounding with new books and activities for kids of various ages.
Tiny Tots, little ones up to 3 years old, meet on Wednesday mornings
from 9:45-10:00 a.m. to enjoy board books, songs, and a
jumping-around-good-time! Preschoolers, ages 3 to 6 years old,
convene on Thursday mornings from 10:00-11:00 a.m. for Preschool
Story Hour, an hour of stories, songs, poems, and a craft. These
tales for each story time surround a particular theme that provides
both entertainment and information for children and help instill in
each child a love for books and reading.
Upper elementary students, 4
through 6 graders, meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
for a fun, interactive book club that includes discussion, games,
activities, and snacks. Currently, the discussion book is The
Borrowers by Mary Norton, a creative adventure about tiny people
who live in houses and "borrow" items from the regular sized humans
who live there as well. The group is also excited about seeing
The Secret World of Arrietty, an upcoming film based on the
first two books in the Borrowers series.
Future Events:
National Library Week
(April 8-14)
Children's Book Week (May
7-13)
Summer Reading Program
"Dream Big: READ" (June and July). Special guests will include
Magician Tommy Terrific
and a live animal show "Creatures of the Night."
